ERG Design System

In creating this design system, we established a set of parameters for what the system needed to be: first, it needed to be easy for non-designers to use but still flexible enough to accommodate their needs; second, related to the overall J&J guidelines without feeling corporate; and third, plug-and-play on our side so that we don't have to reinvent the wheel for all 12 ERGs.

The resulting system utilizes the typeface, single color icons, illustration style and photography style from the J&J guidelines, but then each ERG has a custom, culturally specific logo icon, color palette and set of textures to differentiate themselves from the enterprise and from other groups. The visuals below broadly illustrate our process.

The highlighted assets are variable and customizable for each ERG. Once the baseline toolkit was finalized, ERGs could also commission supplemental messaging assets and illustrations.

To avoid stereotypical depictions and visual shorthand, we conducted broad and deep visual research across architecture, art, textiles, crafts and decorative arts inclusive of all aspects, regions and/or countries represented by the ERG.
